Hybrid Poplars PDF Print E-mail

One Of The Fastest Growing Trees!

In much of North America there are few other trees that grow as rapidly as the hybrid poplar. They are crosses between two or more species or varieties of poplar. Lodholz North Star Acres main varieties, or clones are crosses using Populus deltoides (eastern cottonwood) and Populus nigra (European black poplar). These varieties are male trees, which means they do not produce cotton "fuzz." Our varieties have been widely tested and have shown good growth and disease resistance on a variety of sites over a broad area of North America. You can expect your poplars to grow fast, live a minimum of 25 to 50 years, and reach 50 to 80 feet in height.

Why Hybrid Poplars Are Sold As Unrooted Cuttings

We sell unrooted cuttings which are planted directly in the soil by the customer. An unrooted cutting is an 8" to 10" piece of a tree stem about 1/4" to 1" in diameter. Only a few tree species can be planted this way. This is usually the best way to plant a hybrid poplar tree. Under normal conditions, an unrooted cutting will produce roots and a vigorous tree within two weeks after planting, whithout the transplanting shock that is common with bareroot seedlings. In our opinion, unrooted cuttings are equal or superior to the more expensive rooted cuttings under most planting conditions. Unrooted cuttings can easily be planted by hand or with many of the common tree-planting machines.

When, Where and How To Plant

Our hybrid poplars can be planted throughout most of the US. While they have been most commonly planted in the northern half of North America, our customers in Southern states are reporting excellent results. Plant in the Spring after there is no danger of hard frost. Hybrid poplars do not tolerate shade well and should be planted in the open. A wide range of soils are suitable. Deep sands and soils that are very poorly drained throughout the year should be avoided. Space from 2 to 8 feet within rows and 3 to 10 feet between rows. We recommend 6x6 feet (1,200 trees/acre) or 8x8 feed (700 trees/acre) for fiber and firewood plantings and 6x10 feet for windbreaks. We enclose complete instructions on planting and care with your order .
