White spruce (Picea glauca) is a favorite evergreen for landscaping. Christmas trees, windbreaks, wood production, wildlife plantings, and soil conservation. It is an excellent species to plan in deer areas - as it is usually not eaten by deer. It does well on a wide range of soils - does best on heavier soils. Tolerant to both extreme cold and heat. It requires little shearing and typically commands a premium price in the Christmas tree market. As a pulpwood for paper production, the logs bring some of the highest prices in the northern US. Grows To Mature Size Faster!Projections show these elite hybrids will grow up to twice as fast in volume, 33% faster in diameter, and 20% faster in height on average northern US growing sites than today's standard unimproved white spruce. Their expected genetic superiority throughout the northern US is based on nearly two decades of growth tests and related genetic studies of the selected parents of the hybrids. Although results will vary somewhat by site and growing conditions, the improved growth rate of the Improved Spruce means they can reach mature size in as little as one-half the years usually required. An elite hybrid 15 years after planting, can exceed 25 feet tall and be well over 6 inches in diameter, while a same age conventional white spruce would be considerably smaller. Comparing Improved White Spruce to common white spruce, Christmas tree producers can expect savings of up to 2 to 4 years in the time needed to grow market size trees -without sacrificing quality. Genetically Improved White Spruce can be ready for Christmas tree lot in as little as 8 or 9 years versus the normal 10 to 15 years. Because of their increase growth vigor, the elite hybrids should respond better to shearing than most white spruce currently planted. The nation's professional foresters recently recognized the superior qualities of Genetically Improved White Spruce awarding them 1st place in the Society of American Foresters notional seedling competition. Quicker Enjoyment, More Profits!!The marked faster growth of Genetically Improved White Spruce means that homeowners can enjoy a warm mature landscaped look sooner. Tree farmers, Christmas tree growers, pulp and paper companies, and commercial nurseries can reduce production costs, accelerate cash flow and increase the profits from tree production. Summary
